ImageColumbia County is a rapidly growing region in North Florida. It was created in 1832, named for Christopher Columbus, the famous explorer. Known as the "Gateway to Florida," Columbia County is conveniently located at the crossroads of Interstate 10, running east-west, and Interstate 75, running north-south. According to the 2006 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, the population has doubled totals from the previous 25 years, with numbers over 76,000. At that time, there were 27,819 total housing units. The median household income was $40,834, which was an increase from $30,881 in 2000. The County has a total area of 801 square mile (797 of it is land and 4 of it is water).

The county seat, Lake City, is the county’s economic and governmental center. Lake City has grown into a town that, while cherishing its small-community charm and manners, is forward thinking enough to plan, organize, develop and support modern conveniences and amenities.

Columbia County’s close proximity to airports, railroads, highways and deep water ports makes it a desirable locale for business and distribution. It is midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Coast, in the northern region of the state. With Georgia to its north, adjacent Floridian counties include Union and Baker Counties to the east, Alachua County to the southeast, Gilchrist County to the southwest, and Hamilton and Suwannee Counties to the west.

ImageThe annual average temperature is a very pleasant 69 degrees. Winters are mild, usually preceded by crisp autumn days. The winter average is 40 degrees and the summer average is 91 degrees. Summers are warm, providing many opportunities to enjoy the cool springs and lakes in the "Freshwater Capital of America."

Columbia County is rich with history and has many interesting places to visit and explore. This area of North Florida is so rich with both public and private lakes that, in 1859, the county seat’s name was changed from “Alligator” to “Lake City.” Natural resources like the Ichetucknee Springs, the historic Santa Fe River, and the famous Suwannee River flow in and around our area, offering natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife.

The many lakes, ponds, parks, preserves and woodlands enhance the quality of life in and around the area.
